Founded in January 2007 as The Looney Tunes, we reformed as Second Shift in September 2009.  Based in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, our members come from all over the Triangle and have a wide variety of singing experience. We divide our year into Spring and Fall periods and elect new leadership each period. Each group member contributes to keep the group moving forward, and we also have a lot of fun together!

Brie Adams

  • Member since November 2010
Brie is a sassy soprano from Mebane. Although her previous experience with a cappella groups is limited, she has sung with various other ensembles, ranging from chamber to show choirs. In addition to her years of opera study at UNCG, Brie is also a musical theatre buff, and has performed in productions such as The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. When she's not singing with the choir, in the shower, or at inappropriate times in random public places, Brie enjoys writing poetry, kicking butt in her Tae Kwon Do class, and teaching her amazing 7th and 8th grade students.

Susan is an expressive alto from Carrboro. Susan's musical background includes 3 years with Midnight Echo at the Claremont Colleges and choir membership at every single school she has attended since elementary school (including both graduate schools). She loves choirs because they give her the opportunity to stand really close to people without feeling awkward. When not singing, Susan enjoys playing volleyball, volunteering at Carolina Tiger Rescue, and dissertating.

Jessica is an inspired soprano/mezzo/alto (working her way down to bass) from Durham. Jessica's a cappella background was initially stifled by a family rule against singing at the dinner table, but then blossomed with four and a half years in Duke's Sapphire, a year and a half with the Raleigh JayChords, and random bursts of song, often in public places. When not singing, Jessica attacks her laundry list of art projects, spends lots of time with friends, and goes to work.

Glen is one bad-ass tenor from Cary. Back in those dark days before Glee and The Voice, Glen was regularly (and perhaps justifiably) mocked for his work in such groups as the Rutgers Glee Club, University Glee Club of NYC, Lehigh University Choral Union and NC Master Chorale. With the zeitgeist’s embrace of amateur singing and nerd culture, Glen has emerged from the fetal position ready to rock the suburbs. A corporate communications manager at healthcare IT company M*Modal, Glen enjoys hanging out with his wife and two kids, all who sing as well.

  • Business Director Spring 2008, Fall 2010
Corey is a stoic, heroic, protozoic tenor from Chapel Hill. After doing his share of high school choir and musical theater, Corey spent several years playing intimate venues such as the car, the shower, and various karaoke bars. He is excited to be back in the public eye singing a cappella. When not singing, Corey enjoys making maps, drinking coffee, Tarheel sports, and just about anything outdoors.

Mark is a sonorous bass from Cary. He brought a wealth of virtually zero a cappella experience to the group, however he made up for it with a few decades of musical theatre, choir, contemporary worship, and tuba-playing experience. He's lived in Ohio, Texas (Hook 'em Horns!), and California but has called NC home for the past 25 years. When not performing, Mark earns a living bringing clinical trials to life at GlaxoSmithKline, spending time with his lovely wife Debbie, and living vicariously through his extremely talented offspring, Rob (a video game designer) and Katie (a professional dancer).

  • Webmaster/Gadget-Freak (who else would have a metronome program on their PDA?)
Dave is a versatile bass from the far reaches of northern Orange County. His musical background includes a life-long involvement with vocal groups, from madrigals and classical repertoire, to barbershop and contemporary a cappella.  For his day job, Dave is a Software Engineer at NetApp in RTP.  When he's not singing or working, Dave enjoys designing and making projects of wood and metal, yelling "NO!" at his five cats, and gardening in the yard and extensive woods around his home.

Jason is a rhythmic tenor/baritone and dedicated vocal percussionist originally from Sharon, MA. An alumnus of The Doo-Wop Shop from UMass Amherst, Jason is a professor of Communication at Durham Tech. He earned his PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication from UNC Chapel Hill in 2010. He does not give extra credit.

Hillary Rubesin is a mezzo-soprano (gradually turning into a stronger alto!) from Carrboro, NC. Hillary's musical background includes a lifetime of singing in various choirs and groups, including Wesleyan University's amazing co-ed a cappella group, Quasimodal. She also plays guitar and piano, teaches music to pre-schoolers, and shares her rudimentary song-writing skills with local open-mic attendees when she gets up enough nerve! When not singing, Hillary can be found 1) working as an expressive arts therapist with the NC Art Therapy Institute or 2) eating a chocolate-based dessert.

  • Official Storehouse of Completely Useless Trivia
Michelle is a sugar-addicted soprano from Apex (the peak of good living!). She is an original member of Second Shift who rejoined the group in May 2012 after a year-and-a-half hiatus. Prior to Second Shift, Michelle sang with a variety of groups, including the UNC Chamber Singers; the Jaychords, the Raleigh Jaycees former a cappella group; and her high school Madrigal group. She enjoys being crafty and spending time with her husband, Eric, and two adorable children, Heath and Brooke. When not singing, Michelle is probably asleep.
